Christian and I are officially standardized test EVALUATORS (I was wrong when I stated test grader...I learned my true title on my name tag) for McGraw-Hill/California Testing Bureau. It's not particularly difficult to meet the qualifications; you have to have a bachelor's degree and stamina to sit at a computer all day. It's fascinating to see what type of people sign up for this line of work. I can't say too much about the actual grading. You know, just in case some 4th grade kid in Missouri is reading this and wants to find out how he did on his test. That's not to mention the vows of silence they made us take the first day (signed in blood.) I'll try to give you an idea of what it's like without giving away too many details. We were split into groups, divided by the grade level of the test being evaluated. I'm grading 4th and 5th grade tests and Christian is grading 6th and 8th. We had 3 days of training for 14 different questions, some essays, some are graphic organizers. Training consisted of an overview of all answers that a team of teachers found appropriate for these questions. Yesterday we started the grading process. As a team, you focus on one question at a time, so basically, you see the same question over and over and over. I did 1,900 in one day! It's enough to get your eyes glazed over, but it's not bad for short term work.
Hmmmm...maybe you miss working at the Pet Hospital? Can't imagine the monotony of grading the same question 1,900 times, but at least it's a job. Our children only repeat themselves 600-800 times per day. Glad to hear you are getting settled in your new home.
ReplyDeleteThat crazy where did you here about that job? I always thought that they just ran them through a comptuter and I guess they do. They just run them through you too.
