Little House Nerd

I have two sisters. One is older, one is younger. One is married to a man named Brad. I am married to a man named Christian. Both Brad and Christian like to tell our sisterly trio that we grew up as pioneers just because we didn't have cable and we didn't play video games. I often contest this label, but in reality, we did spend most of our childhood pretending we were pioneers. We read all the Little House on the Prairie books as a family, we watched the television show on a regular basis, and all three of us owned at least one pioneer bonnet. Considering all that, imagine my excitement when I heard that Little House on the Prairie THE MUSICAL featuring Melissa Gilbert (those of you who watched regular cartoons as a child may not know that Melissa Gilbert played Laura Ingalls for over ten years on TV and is like a really big deal in the pioneering world) was in Sacramento the same week my little sister was coming to town. We bought tickets, we went, and we loved every minute of it, and I even cried at the end. That guess that makes me a pretty big nerd.

There she is! The Melissa Gilbert! We ran into a little cult following after the show and found out that the boy who played Willy Olsen is her son.

  1. Carried told us about this. Sounds like it was lots of fun. We get to make Megan some pioneer clothes for her trek this summer so she can pretend to be a pioneer for 4 days.

  2. As I was the 4th sister in the Gold family during those "Happy Golden Years" of the Little House on the Prairie obsession(yes I am currently starting the series again for my summer off of school) I would like to note that I still remember the little pink pioneer dress (it was a two piece with a top and bottom part) that was my favorite part of your extensive pioneer wardrobe located under your stairs. I would also like to note that I am jealous you got to see it on stage as a musical. Maybe I should go watch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to make myself feel better or something....

  3. Okay... now I'm jealous. I had thought about going to see this and now I'm sad that I just didn't go! I'm glad you got to go with your sister, though. I have many memories related to these stories/show with my sisters as well!

  4. Oh my gosh! She DOES look just like Laura.

Oh, and by the way, I don't know if you were embarassed to mention it - but don't forget the fact that we not only dressed like pioneers, but we dressed & acted like them in public when we volunteered at This is the Place State for an ENTIRE SUMMER. And I still know how to spin wool, so you know, valuable skills.

Molly, I'm so glad you commented!
