They Grow Up So Fast

I feel like James should still be about four months old. I can't believe that in a month and a half he will be a year old. I feel like I keep missing big milestones with him because they come so fast. It's like one day he didn't know how to crawl and then the next he could crawl faster than I could walk.

James has been saying Ma ma and Da da for a while now, but just the other day, I realized he knows at least one other word. For three meals in a row, whenever I sat James down in his highchair he would get really fussy and start shrieking BA BA BA! I could NOT figure it out! I thought maybe something was pinching him or that maybe he just wasn't hungry. Finally I figured out that from his chair he can see our fruit basket and on the top was a whole bunch of bananas. I gave him one and he was as happy as can be. Now when he says, "ba ba ba," I give him a banana and he claps. The funny thing is that banana was Kate's first that wasn't Ma ma or Da da but she said "na na" instead.

James has also gotten very quick. The other day I went to throw something away in the garbage can. I was gone for about 15 seconds and by the time I got back, he was on the fifth step (the one in the very corner of the picture below.) He's a quick little guy! I didn't even know that he knew how to climb stairs!! I've tried to figure out a baby gate, but the railing area is really thin and the bars don't exactly line up, so I made this:I felt pretty proud of my craftiness and for now it seems to be doing the job.

I think walking will be the next thing in James' bag of tricks. He's already walking all over the furniture and walls (it's really funny to see him go hand over hand along the wall). On occasion, he lets go for a few seconds.

He still has a great sense of humor. When we're eating, he waits until Kate is looking and the hurls his sippy cup of the highchair tray. They both burst into guffaws. He also loves to play peek-a-boo and steal toys from Kate. He is such a sweet little guy and I love having him in our family.
