Trains are more than just a game.
This weekend because of all the flight cancelations, Christian and I tried our hand at a new form of transportation. Amtrak. We even upgraded to get in the sleeper car. It was amazing! We walked on the train and there was Sandi, ready to help us. She showed us the way to our cabin, and explained all the train rules (like, you can't go barefoot around the halls). She also explained where we could find the bathrooms, showers (yep, you can shower on the train! They even provide towels), the dinning car, lounge car, and free juice and water. It looked like something right out of Harry Potter with the two seats, one facing forward and the other facing back, and of course, the sliding door. We had a big picture window where we watched the Sierra Nevadas go by, very scenic. After a while, we were called to the dining car to eat lunch. The best part: meals are included in the upgrade! So of course, we ate our fill, including dessert. I had the special followed by raspberry cheesecake. For dinner I had roast hen and again, raspberry cheesecake for dessert. The dining car consists of cafe like booths and they fill every seat. If there are only two of you, you meet two new people automatically. We enjoyed lunch with a nice couple from Australia and dinner with a couple from Maine. Can you believe this? They went from Maine to California and now they were on their way back. All by train! When night fell, Sandi came to back our beds for us. The two seats fold together to make one bed and the other folds down from above. I wasn't sure how well I'd be able to sleep on the train, but the rocking back and forth put me right to sleep. I had a great night! The trip ended up being about twice as long driving but we LOVED every minute. We are planning on repeating our adventure when we come back for Christmas (but this time instead of the California Zephyr maybe we'll ride the Polar Express). I think we are now both converted trainees.

Sounds like you had a wonderful train ride. The Maine to California trip sounded interesting, though that might be more train than I could handle. There is a train from Sydney to Perth Australia which we considered taking in 2001, but we realized our entire trip would have been on the train. ~Kevin
