On the day of our engagement, Christian and I visited many of our family members in order to announce the good news. One of our stops, of course, was the Kelsey home. Christian's dad, Chris, was excited to discover that he was going to have a new daughter-in-law. I did, however, need to pass one test before entering the family.
"You don't like BYU, do you?"
I knew Chris was quizzing me. As I looked around the house I saw a sign that read "Ute Fans Live Here" hanging above the doorway right next to a family picture with all four kids sporting U of U attire. I quickly answered something along the lines of, "Well, my sister goes to BYU, but I still love her."
Now, I want to emphasize the fact that I am a proud University of Utah graduate. There is, however, a confession I never made to my father-in-law: I have never watched a University of Utah football game. Never. Not once. Not even the half-time show. Even worse, because I've never committed myself to a football game, I've never felt any real animosity towards Brigham Young University.
I guess the time has come for me to step over the threshold. This Saturday, I will be watching my first ever U of U football game with my husband. No more fence-sitting. I am committing myself to follow Kelsey Family tradition and feel pangs of resentment towards the opposing blue team and rushes of pride for those in red.
I can't believe you stepped over to the dark side! I don't know about this friendship of ours... have you really thought about what you're doing? You're committing yourself to the wrong side, don't you know that good always wins over evil? Well I guess you'll see this saturday.
