Adventures in Cloth

With the coming of baby number two, I've been doing some calculations in my head and I realized we are going to be spending a fortune on diapers. I started reading a lot on the Internet about cloth diapers. I was pretty sceptical. It seemed like too much extra work to wash. Then I had a life changing experience. I got a dishwasher. I've said this before, but let me repeat it, that thing has CHANGED MY LIFE. It is absolutely lovely. All of the sudden, cloth diapers seemed somewhat reasonable. It seemed reasonable to do an extra load of laundry if I didn't have to do dishes all day long. I started asking my cloth-diapering genius cousin a million questions. Fortunately for me, she' a guru, knows everything there is to know, AND sent me a gift certificate to get started (yes, she is the best).

My box of diapers arrived on Monday. I got 5 diapers, all different kinds. For those of you who speak cloth diaper (it is a whole different language I've found), I got 2 different pocket diapers, 3 covers, 1 fitted diaper, 1 contour diaper, and 1 prefold. After I washed them yesterday I was all set to try them out today. I decided I'd wait until after Kate pooped this morning (she usually poops once in the morning and once in the late afternoon) before putting one on. She pooped, I thought I was safe, put on the very first brand new clean diaper, and 30 seconds later she exploded with poop. So much for starting out slow!

I made it through all 5 diapers today without too many other problems. They're in the wash right now ready to get tried again tomorrow. I'm not sure how this all is going to go, but I figured it was worth a shot, right?
The good thing about cloth diapers is that Kate now has enough in her caboose to keep her pants up! Look at that cute little bubble bum.

  1. I've been using cloth diapers with baby number three. It's a lot easier than I thought it would be, but the poopy ones are a little gross. I just wish I had started sooner so that I could have saved even more money! I mostly have BumGenius and FuzziBunz. What kinds do you have, which do you like the most?
