Cupcakes, Dinosaurs, and Rock and Roll

Today was Christian's birthday. He's getting to the point where one cupcake cannot hold all the candles he needs to make an official birthday wish. Can you see that poor cupcake splitting at the edges?? That means he's old. However, as I was getting ready this morning, I found some gray hair, so I guess that means I'm old too. I suppose that means we make a good pair. We had cupcakes this morning because once we made them James couldn't wait any longer to eat them. We turned out the lights, sang, and feasted. After she ate her cupcake, Kate sweetly looked at Christian and said, in a very consoling manner, "Daddy, it's ok none of your friends could make it to the party." I'm pretty sure she thinks his friends stood him up for our impromptu birthday singing and she wanted to make him feel better. She's a pretty sweet girl like that.
Our first stop for the day was Dinosaur ridge in Morrison. It was a lot of fun. The kids (and Christian) dug for dinosaur fossils.
Kate was very proud of her 'fossil' (it dates back to last month....when it was made with plaster-of-Paris) and showed it too me many times. She got to put it in this little souvenir bag.
The kids didn't get enough digging in the sand pit so we headed over to the gravel pit where they dug for a solid 40 minutes. Some fantastic discoveries were made.
After digging, the kids got brave enough to pet some of the plaster-o-sauruses.

Then we went on a bus/van (I'm not sure which it would qualify as) tour and got to touch some real dinosaur bones.

As well as footprints.

After Dinosaur ridge, we drove about a mile and a half to Red Rocks Amphitheater. It was BEAUTIFUL! I would really like to go to a concert there someday. Kate's ready to make a stage debut in the near future.
James, on the other hand, was more interested in the geologic properties of the stage.
Did I mention it is BEAUTIFUL??
This guy is pretty handsome as well, don't you think?
After we walked around the amphitheater, we went to the visitors' center. There was a video playing with several of the bands that have performed at Red Rocks. The kids jumped around and danced, rocking out for a good half hour. Shortly after, they both had major melt-downs in the car, but it was all worth it for such a fun day.

Christian, I sure am glad you were born 28 year ago. I love you lots and lots! Happy Birthday!!
