Rocket Ships and Electrical Outlets

Currently James' and Kate are both fascinated with outer space and James is fascinated with electricity.

On our way to gymnastics this week James suddenly got quiet and started staring at the ceiling of the car. Finally he said, "Mom, is there electricity in the ceiling of our car?" I answered, "No, I don't think so, Buddy." He sat quietly for another minute and then said, "I think there is. There is a light on the ceiling of the car so it has to have electricity." I laughed and said, "I guess you're right! I hadn't thought about that before!" Today he was playing with a fishing game, the kind that goes around in a circle while you put a plastic fishing pole in and try to catch the fish as they open and close their mouths. He said, "Mom, this game has electricity because it has batteries."

The space interest has been going on for quite a while longer than the electricity obsession. I think it started this last summer, but it's recently been intensified because Christian dug his telescope out of the garage and he and Kate put it back together. On clear nights when it's not too cold Christian sets it up on the porch and he shows the kids all sorts of things.

Since the kids have started to figure out what is going on in the night sky, I've been trying to pay attention too. I'm pretty proud of the fact that I can successfully identify Venus almost every night. It's usually the first thing we can see. Here's a grainy picture from our porch.

Because of these two fascinations, I've been especially glad that we decided to invest in a membership to the Air and Space museum this year. It has tons of air-crafts as well as a kids science section and recently they did a fantastic exhibit all about math.
This last picture is from the math exhibit. This is a tricycle that has square wheels. Kate thought it was hilarious. James also found it funny, but refused to try it out. They had about 20 other little areas that had experiments based off different math concepts. I learned a ton while I was there!
