At the end of August, even before Kate's birthday, school started. Kate is enrolled in a school that's different than most. It's a charter through the public school system, but it only meets one day a week and then we do the rest at home.
I love it. I feel like it's a really good match for our family. I really like the structure and I also really like the atmosphere at the school.
A week before school even started, they had an ice cream social for the kids K-2. We decided to walk/bike since it's not too far. Kate was really excited, but also pretty nervous. As we were making our way over to the school she said, "My bike keeps going the wrong direction because it's a little bit scared."

She had nothing to worry about! When we got there, the courtyard was filled with activities, new friends, and ice cream. My kids liked the bubble wrap the best!
Now that she felt a little more comfortable with school, she couldn't wait for the first day. James was pretty excited, too.
The whole family, even Christian, went to drop her off. She was beaming as we left.
James, on the other hand, was starting to have second thoughts about this whole school business.
Pretty soon after we left, there were plenty of tears.
Now that we're a couple weeks in, James enjoys his Mommy/James days. Two weeks ago he decided we should go to IKEA together. Last week we went to the lake. This week we went to a museum. I'm glad he finally figured out how much fun we could have together.

I've been lurking/reading your blog for a while :) Your children are so beautiful and it is fun to watch them grow! I'm so excited for you and Kate. It sounds like you found a really cool program. I hope it works well for you guys! It is so fun to have the kiddos at home, but it's also great when they get a little bit of time away.
ReplyDeleteI love that idea of school. I've actually been looking into the charter schools in our area, but I haven't seen any with a model like that. I wish I could find one like where Kate is going. I've been considering getting our kids into some kind of more formal schooling, but hesitate to jump straight to full time. I'm glad you found a school that you guys like!
