Our (slightly disappointing) Backyard Garden

My friend Sydney always had potted plants in her apartment in Sacramento. Last spring I thought to myself, "If Sydney can grow potted plants, so can I." I was mildly successful. Kate picked out the seeds. She picked carrots, peas, strawberries, pumpkins, sunflowers, and basil. The carrots never grew past about an inch high. They had tiny roots that looked like little carrots, but overall, not a huge success (this wasn't too much of a surprise. Who ever heard of potted carrots?). The peas did well for a while, but never got large enough to actually grow peas. We started with one strawberry plant and after it died bought another one. Neither plant produced a berry. Oh well. The pumpkin plant grew a nice big vine and even some flowers, but then I forgot to water it and it died. The sunflowers finally flowered, but died shortly after. The basil was the only real success. It grew to do what seeds are supposed to do. I even used it to cook a couple of times. Here's a picture of the pumpkin (pre-death), the unimpressively small blossom of the sunflower, and what was left of everything else.

I may not have a green thumb, but at least our grass is still alive out front!
(Ok, ok. The HOA has a gardener who takes care of the front, but I'll still claim it as my own.)
