Fire Station

We have a really fun group of kids and moms that get together once a week to play together and do fun things together. Two weeks ago we made a trip to the fire station. It was fantastic!

First they taught the kids not to play with matches and how to 'stop, drop, and roll'.

Then it was off to the garage to see the fire truck.

One of the fire-fighters then dressed up in his full get up including turning on the oxygen tank.

They encouraged the kids to come up and touch him in his uniform so that they could see he was still the same person, even though he looked and sounded funny. James jumped right up, but Kate refused.

The kids got badges and hats and then lined up in front of the truck.

This is my friend Mindy and her daughter Kaylee. I love this picture because of the look on Kaylee's face. She was less than excited when the lights and sirens turned on.

We even got to see one of the fire fighters slide down the fire pole. That was James' favorite part.
It was a really fun trip and I learned a lot of interesting things. For example, did you know that only 30% of firefighter calls are actually fire related? Because of all the safety regulations that have been enforced, they do much more with medical emergencies and car accidents now days. Because of that, the requirements for training are slightly different than they were in the past, which means many more women are able to become fire fighters. I also learned how much water the trucks hold, how often they wash the trucks, and the fact that you don't get to hold the remote control unless you are one of the highest ranking officers. Interesting stuff, right?
